NOTES: 'Abstract: Honeycomb And Honey Heavily Contaminated With Spores Of Bacillus larvae (Agent Of American Foulbrood Disease Of Honeybee Larvae) Were Exposed To Gamma Radiation From Cobalt-60. Sterility Was Achieved By A Dose Of 1.5 X 106 To 2.0 X 106 Rads. Sugar-Tolerant Yeasts In Honey Were Effectively Destroyed By A Dose Of 1 X 106 Rads Whereas Cysts Of Nosema apis (Agent Of Nosema Disease Of Adult Bees) Were Inactivated By A Dose Of 0.2 X 106 Rads. The Economic Feasibility Of Using Gamma Radiation To Sterilize Honeycomb, Honey, Wax, Supers, Package Cages, And Related Beekeeping Equipment Is Discussed.' (Note: Dr. H. NOTES: 'Entire Brood Combs Containing Large Numbers Of Larvae With American Foul Brood Disease (Scales) Were Irradiated In 5-Frame Small Hives In A Pneumatic Facility Designed By Atomic Energy Of Canada, Ltd. Outgrowth Of Spores In Vitro And Protease Activity Of The Scales Were Not Eleiminated By Exposure Up To 1.0 Mrad Of Gamma Radiation From The Co(60) Source; However, Infectivity Of Such Combs Was Almost Completely Eliminated By 0.2 Mrad. Approximately 0.01% Of The Spores Capable Of Germination And Outgrowth From Untreated Scale Material Were Found Viable In Culture After Exposure To This Level. The Amount Of Sucrose Syrup Fed To Colonies Or The Time Of Year They Were Inoculated Had Little Effect On The Progress Of The Disease.'
